“Happiness and suffering are feelings – parts of our mind – and so their main causes are not to be found outside the mind. If we really want to be truly happy and free from suffering, we must improve our understanding of the mind.”
Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche
We often speak about our mind, saying ‘I’m in two minds’, ‘ I’ve changed my mind’, ‘I’ve got a lot on my mind’, but do we actually know what our mind is and the part it plays in our everyday experience of happiness and suffering.
This series of classes will lead us to a greater understanding of our own mind using the insights Buddha gained though many years of meditation. Through this we will realise that the answer to our suffering and unhappiness lies not in our external conditions but in improving our inner experience of positive and peaceful states of mind.
The essential point of understanding the mind is that liberation from suffering cannot be found outside the mind. Permanent liberation can be found only by purifying the mind. Therefore, if we want to become free from problems and attain lasting peace and happiness, we need to increase our knowledge and understanding of the mind.
