The New Kadampa Tradition
The meditation classes on this website are run by the New Kadampa Tradition – International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU).
This is an international association of study and meditation centers that follow the pure tradition of Mahayana Buddhism derived from the Buddhist meditators and scholarsAtisha and Je Tsongkhapa and introduced into the West by the Buddhist Teacher Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.
Kadampa Buddhism is a special tradition of Mahayana Buddhism founded by Atisha(982-1054 CE), an Indian Buddhist Master largely responsible for the reintroduction of Buddhism into Tibet in the eleventh century.‘Ka’ refers to all Buddha’s Sutra and Tantra teachings, and ‘dam’ refers to Atisha’s special instructions called the ‘Stages of the Path’, or Lamrim in Tibetan. Kadampa Buddhists integrate their knowledge of all Buddha’s teachings into their everyday lives.
With 1,100 Kadampa Buddhist centres and groups around the world, there are thousands of people now practicing Kadampa Buddhism under the guidance of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. This worldwide Kadampa community is like a global spiritual family who help us progress in our practice.
